Pronoun

1. 1

   A pronoun used to indicate something close to the listener or something the listener has in mind.

   Korean definition: 듣는 사람에게 가까이 있거나 듣는 사람이 생각하고 있는 것을 가리키는 말.

   • 선생님은 내 만화책을 가리키며 "그게 뭐야?"라고 물으셨다.

     The teacher pointed at my comic book and asked, "What's that?"

   • 테이블 건너편에 앉은 승규가 내 앞의 소금통을 가리키며 "그거 좀 줘"라고 말했다.

     Seunggyu, sitting across the table, pointed at the salt shaker in front of me and said, "Pass me that."

2. 2

   A pronoun used to indicate the previously-mentioned object.

   Korean definition: 앞에서 이미 이야기한 대상을 가리키는 말.

   • 선생님은 내 말을 듣고 "그게 정말이냐?"라고 물으셨다.

     After hearing what I said, the teacher asked, "Is that true?"

   • "그건 나도 모른다고 했잖아!" 승규는 내 질문에 화를 내며 대답했다.

     "I told you I don't know that either!" Seunggyu answered my question angrily.

   (disparaging) The person.

   Korean definition: (낮잡아 이르는 말로) 그 사람.

   • 우리를 실컷 욕하고 갔던 그게 무슨 염치로 돌아왔대?

     That guy who cursed us to our hearts' content and left, how does he have the nerve to come back?

   • 그게 날 얼마나 얕봤으면 속이 뻔히 보이는 거짓말을 했겠어.

     How much must that one look down on me to tell such a transparent lie?

4. 4

   (endearing) The child.

   Korean definition: (귀엽게 이르는 말로) 그 아이.

   • 그게 벌써 초등학교에 들어갔다네요.

     I hear that little one has already started elementary school.

   • 앞집 꼬마 녀석, 그게 얼마나 영특한지 동네에 소문이 자자해.

     That little kid across the street, he's so clever that the whole neighborhood is talking about it.
