-아도/어도 vs -더라도
Intermediate · TOPIK II
Both mean 'even if / even though'. -아도/어도 is all-purpose, for facts and hypotheses; -더라도 stresses a hypothetical ('even if that were to happen', often something unlikely) and sounds stronger and more formal.
Rules of thumb
- Real facts and habits (아무리 바빠도 아침은 먹어요 'However busy I am, I eat breakfast'): -아도 is more natural.
- Hypothetical situations, especially with resolve: -더라도 (무슨 일이 있더라도 포기하지 마세요 'Whatever happens, don't give up').
- Both often pair with 아무리, 혹시, 설령 for emphasis.
- Both can be followed by commands or suggestions.
- -더라도 sounds more formal and written; in everyday chat -아도 is far more common.
